Five moral rules of a Buddhist Lay Follower


There are five moral rules (in Pali: Panca-sila) that should observe by a Buddhist lay follower. Everyone who practices Buddhism, should know this five moral rules as they are the basics and the entrance to the spiritual liberations. What are those five moral rules that should be followed by a Buddhist lay follower?

  1. Abstain from killing any living being.
  2. Abstain from stealing.
  3. Abstain from unlawful sexual intercourse.
  4. Abstain from lying.
  5. Abstain from use of intoxicants.
Those are the five moral rules that should be followed by a Buddhist lay follower. By observing these moral rules, you can lead your life for the spiritual liberation. Sometimes you may already know these moral rules. Try to protect them by heart. The Buddha also showed us five benefits we gain by protecting these five moral rules. What are those five benefits?

A virtuous person who protects sila (moral rules) will gain following blessings;
  1. Great increase of wealth through his diligence.
  2. Receives a great reputation.
  3. Can behave confidently without fear, among nobles, rulers, brahmins, or any society high or low.
  4. Deserves a serene death.
  5. After the death he/ she will reborn in heaven.
So may all Buddhist lay followers observe these five moral rules and purify your life.
