Karaniya Metta Sutta - Meaning and Improtance


Karanīya Mettā Sutta is a valuable sutta that was discoursed by The Buddha. This sermon teach us how to meditate on metta (loving Kindness) and what are qualities we should develop before practicing successful meditation.

  • Story
The reason to discourse this sermon is as follows;

A group of five hundred monks receiving instructions from the Buddha to practice a certain type of meditation, they went to a forest with hope of attaining spiritual liberation during the rainy season.

each monk select a suitable tree with shelter to settle and meditate throughout the rainy season. These trees were inhabited by tree-deities. These deities who are below from moral than monks could not stay at their mansions build on trees. They thought that the monks would leave the forest soon and bore the inconvenience. But later when they discovered monks are going to stay throughout the rainy season, these deities planned to frighten the monks away by showing them furious things, making dreadful noises, and spreading unbearable odor.

The monks could no longer concentrate on meditation and they become confused. They decided to visit their teacher, the Lord Buddha, before the end of rainy season and inform the matter.

Buddha hearing their pathetic situation, using his supernormal powers scanned whole India and found that there's no other place than that forest where these monks could attain their spiritual liberation. So Buddha state that "O monks, there's no other place than that forest where you could attain your spiritual liberation. So listen this formula of protection (Paritta), learn this well, go back to the forest and practice this. This will protect you from the harassments of the deities. This formula of protection will lead you to your spiritual liberation as well." Then the Buddha discoursed this valuable sutta (sermon) or the paritta (formula of protection).

Karanīyam atthakusalena
yan taṃ santaṃ padaṃ abhisamecca:
Sakko ujū ca sūjū ca
suvaco c'assa mudu anatimānī,

Santussako ca subharo ca

appakicco ca sallahukavutti
Santindriyo ca nipako ca
appagabbho kulesu ananugiddho,

Na ca khuddaṃ samācare kiñci

yena viññū pare upavadeyyuṃ
Sukhino vā khemino hontu
sabbe sattā bhavantu sukhitattā:

Ye keci pāṇabhūt' atthi

tasā vā thāvarā vā anavasesā
Dīgha vā ye mahantā vā
majjhimā rassakā aṇukathūlā

Diṭṭhā vā ye vā addiṭṭhā

ye ca dūre vasanti avidūre
Bhūtā vā sambhavesī vā
sabbe sattā bhavantu sukhitattā

Na paro paraṃ nikubbetha

nâtimaññetha katthacinaṃ kañci
Byārosanā paṭighasaññā
nāññamaññassa dukkham iccheyya

Mātā yathā niyaṃ puttaṃ

āyusā ekaputtam anurakkhe
Evam pi sabbabhūtesu
mānasam bhāvaye aparimāṇaṃ

Mettañ ca sabbalokasmiṃ

mānasam bhāvaye aparimāṇaṃ
Uddhaṃ adho ca tiriyañ ca
asambādhaṃ averaṃ asapattaṃ

Tiṭṭhaṃ caraṃ nisinno vā

sayāno vā yāvat' assa vigatamiddho
Etaṃ satiṃ adhiṭṭheyya
brahmam etaṃ vihāraṃ idha-m-ahu

Diṭṭiñ ca anupagamma

sīlavā dassanena sampanno
Kāmesu vineyya gedhaṃ
na hi jātu gabbhaseyyaṃ punar etī ti


  • Karanīya Metta Sutta - English meaning
Who seeks to promote his welfare,
Having glimpsed the state of perfect peace,
Should be able, honest and upright,
Gentle in speech, meek and not proud.

Contented, he ought to be easy to support,
Not over-busy, and simple in living.
Tranquil his senses, let him be prudent,
And not brazen, nor fawning on families.

Also, he must refrain from any action
That gives the wise reason to reprove him.
(Then let him cultivate the thought:)
May all be well and secure,
May all beings be happy!

Whatever living creatures there be,
Without exception, weak or strong,
Long, huge or middle-sized,
Or short, minute or bulky,

Whether visible or invisible,
And those living far or near,
The born and those seeking birth,
May all beings be happy!

Let none deceive or decry
His fellow anywhere;
Let none wish others harm
In resentment or in hate.

Just as with her own life
A mother shields from hurt
Her own son, her only child,
Let all-embracing thoughts
For all beings be yours.

Cultivate an all-embracing mind of love
For all throughout the universe,
In all its height, depth and breadth
Love that is untroubled
And beyond hatred or enmity.

As you stand, walk, sit or lie,
So long as you are awake,
Pursue this awareness with your might:
It is deemed the Divine State here.

Holding no more to wrong beliefs,
With virtue and vision of the ultimate,
And having overcome all sensual desire,
Never in a womb is one born again.
